First, I' m not a landscaper, builder or any other person who would normally be the type expected to buy a device like this. I' m out in the woods a lot, and I had a need to measure the heights of trees and the altitude differences along a slope, so that I could figure out what trees needed to be cleared to get a proper view. It took a while for me to discover that a device like this existed and what it was called. Once I found it, I used this ( usually set at 45 degrees) in combination with a laser range finder to get reasonable approximations of how high various trees were around the property. Plus, some basic trigonometry skills ( which I had mostly forgotten, so I googled them) . It also provided me some assistance in figuring out how many feet up a slope I was walking. It served its purpose.
